Michael Whelan is a national award-winning author, storyteller, playwright, musician, mythologist and historian. He has been producing, directing and acting for the theatre for 30 years across the United States and Ireland. Michael has also taught Irish folklore and Celtic myth, theatre, world history, storytelling and mythology at the university and college levels. He has been the producer or artistic director of 19 theatre companies and all of his 60-plus plays have been produced. For the last 10 years Michael has concentrated on radio theatre, including National Public Radio, and each of his 17 radio plays has been broadcast. From 1992 to 1999 he was President of the Northwest Playwrights Guild, a regional organization representing 800 playwrights across a six-state area.
Currently, Michael serves as the Artistic Director of Avalon Productions in Portland, Oregon, and is their Playwright in Residence.
The Salem Times has referred to Michael as "the premier Irish storyteller in the Northwest."
